It all started with a vision to assist with natural environment preservation. With a passion and experience in wildlife inventories, BMG was established to help organizations achieve their conservation goals within various environmental sectors across Canada.

The founder.

Justin Kestler has collaborated on a variety of wildlife monitoring projects within the government, consulting, academic research, and non-profit sectors. His wildlife survey field experience spans across Canada with a focus on species-at-risk.

He excels with remote monitoring techniques, including bat and bird bio-acoustics as well as trail camera work. Justin has recently authored his first field identification guide, The Hair Scale Identification Guide to the Terrestrial Mammalian Carnivores of Canada, which was released with Pelagic Publishing in late 2022.

Justin’s previous work and project experience

  • Wildlife biologist. Conducted various wildlife survey work, managed bio-acoustic projects and assisted with baseline reports in Saskatchewan.

  • Wildlife Biologist. Conducted bioinventories and stewardship for various land trusts across southern and central Ontario. Also managed bio-acoustic projects targeting species-at-risk.

  • Wildlife technician. Conducted mammalian monitoring survey over the winter season near Sault Ste. Marie, ON. The ensuing work led to receiving the Pam Bent Conservation Award.

  • Research technician. Providing technical field support for undergraduate students in Gaspé, QB.

  • Forestry technician. Assisted with Dr. Lisa Venier’s forest songbird project in Gaspé, QB - primarily with autonomous recording unit deployment and habitat assessments.

  • Wildlife biologist. Conducted various wildlife survey work in Alberta and British Columbia. Also analyzed bat call transcriptions and conducted desktop reviews.

  • Bio-acoustic & Environmental Data Technician. Assisted the Bio-acoustic Unit on the long-term songbird project at Calling Lake, AB, including managing bio-acoustic gear and bird song data transcription.
